Dental Crowns

Your NW Calgary Choice for Dental Crowns!

When it comes to repairing damaged teeth, fillings and other bonding agents can only accomplish so much. If a tooth is chipped, cracked, or broken past a certain point, a dental crown may need to be placed over the tooth in order to be sure that no additional damage occurs. Montgomery Dental Centre is pleased to offer dental crowns.

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown also called a “dental cap,” is a permanent dental restoration that completely caps or encircles a weak or damaged tooth or dental implant, to protect and cover the tooth, and restores the shape, size, and strength of the tooth. It is used when a large cavity threatens the health of the tooth and a filling or other type of restoration does not solve the problem.

Why do I need a Crown?

The most common reason for a crown is to cover the tooth and provide strength, where a filling cannot. If a filling is too large, it is likely to chip, break, or leak, which can result in further complications. Crowns are used if the large filling will not provide any added benefit and may weaken the tooth. Reasons for a Crown include:

  • Protecting a weak tooth from breaking or to keep the weak tooth together if parts of it are cracked
  • Restore a broken tooth or a severely worn down tooth
  • Cover and support a tooth with a large filling and not much tooth remaining
  • Hold a dental bridge in place
  • Cover a misshapen or severely discoloured tooth
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Cover a tooth that’s been treated with a root canal
  • Cosmetic enhancement

Do crowns last forever?

Like anything in life, nothing lasts forever. But the more you do to maintain your crown, the longer it will last. Flossing is essential, as is continuing with regular checkups and cleanings. On average, crowns can last between 5 and 15 years. It is determined by personal lifestyles and mouth-related habits, your oral hygiene practices, and the amount of wear and tear your crown can take.

If the tooth is not bothering me, do I need a crown?

Sometimes a crown might be recommended before anything happens, as preventative care. Since prevention is the best medicine, a crown might sometimes be recommended before anything happens. When large fillings or cracks are left alone, they often cause issues that are complicated and require further and more expensive treatment if not treated right away.
