Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Your NW Calgary Choice for Wisdom Teeth Extraction!

Some people never develop their wisdom teeth. For others, wisdom teeth erupt normally and cause no problems at all. For the vast majority however, there is simply not enough room to accommodate wisdom teeth, and so extraction may be required. Montgomery Dental Centre is pleased to offer wisdom teeth extractions.

What are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth do not provide the wisdom that their name implies! Wisdom teeth are a third and extra set of molars in the back corners of your mouth, on the top and bottom. They usually come in between the ages of 17-25, and they are spotted on a special x-ray called a panorex. They can grow in and cause no problems at all, or they can grow in at strange angles (like horizontally or tilted into or away from their neighbouring teeth) and cause issues.

Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Your dentist will make the recommendation of whether wisdom tooth extraction is best, based on your examination and x-rays. Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed; for some people, wisdom teeth erupt and function normally, and cause no problems at all. They may be perfectly aligned and your mouth has space for them to come out straight. In such cases, all you need to do is brush, floss, continue regular cleanings, and count yourself lucky!

In many other cases however, patients are not so lucky, and there are reasons to remove them:

  • They are Impacted – Impacted wisdom teeth are the most common reasons for removal. Impaction of a tooth occurs when there is insufficient space in the dental arch for proper eruption, and its growth is affected by gum, bone, or another tooth. Wisdom teeth sometimes erupt only partially in the mouth. They can be trapped in your jawbone or gums, which can be painful and may pose a risk for potential infection
  • Crowding – sometimes your jaw has no room for an extra set of molars.
  • Wisdom teeth have been known to grow diagonally and horizontally, which can cause a myriad of issues including infection of surrounding tissues and damage to the adjacent second molars
  • Gum infection due to food being trapped
  • Pain from sinuses or lower jaw
  • Removal to allow orthodontic treatment – your orthodontist may require wisdom teeth be removed to allow space to align your teeth correctly
  • Cavities on wisdom teeth that cannot be repaired
