While routine home maintenance is effective, it only focuses on areas of the tooth above the gum line (known as scaling). A professional in-office cleaning will be able to clean your teeth above the gum line, but also below the gum line as well (known as root planning). Since regular scaling and root planing procedures can remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria toxins from the hard to reach areas, regular cleanings from your dentist are one of the most important steps a person can take to make sure that teeth and gums are as healthy as possible.

First, general cleanings allow your dentist to make sure that any plaque or tartar that has developed along the gum line is scraped away. Plaque and tartar can lead to the development of gum disease. Removing both as soon as possible prevents the health of the gums and teeth from being compromised. Second, general cleanings give us a chance to identify any potential issues that may have a negative effect on a patient’s oral health.

Montgomery Dental Centre understands that each patient has different dental needs, and therefore will require a different hygiene schedule. While most people visit their dentist every six months, some people benefit from coming in every 3-4 months, while others might only require an appointment every 9-12 months. How often you schedule a hygiene visit depends on many factors, including how your home oral health maintenance care is, whether your teeth are susceptible to excess accumulation of plaque and calculus, how crowded your teeth are, and whether or not you have missing teeth or any fillings.
