What is TMJ?

TMJ is a condition that affects your temporomandibular joint, the joint that connects the lower jaw to your skull. It allows your jaw to open and close and enables you to eat and speak. TMD disorders refer to problems associated with your jaw movement, and pain in and around your jaw joints.

What are the symptoms of TMD?

  • Grinding or clenching your teeth during the day and night
  • Frequent headaches and pain in your neck
  • Stiffness in the muscles of the jaw
  • Limited movement of the jaw
  • Locking of the jaw
  • A ‘clicking’ or ‘popping’ sound when you open and close your mouth
  • Difficulty opening your mouth wide, or pain when doing so
  • You have ever suffered an injury to your neck, head, or jaw
  • Arthritis in other joints throughout the body
  • Your teeth no longer touch when you bite together (called malocclusion)

How do we treat TMJ/TMD?

Montgomery Dental Centre is committed to helping relieve the associated pain and discomfort of TMJ/TMD. The first stop in dental treatment will often be a custom night guard or splint. This is a clear, plastic, custom fitted dental device that fits over the biting surfaces of your teeth so that you bite against the guard or splint rather than your teeth. This can help joints and muscles relax, which will hopefully help realign the jaw, and thereby prevent jaw clenching. It is thought that less jaw clenching will alleviate the symptoms and pain associated with TMJ, while also protecting your teeth.

If your pain continues even with the use of a night guard or splint, your dentist may refer you to a specialist in TMD.
